Kendo kata
Kata?
Kata are predetermined sequences of movements practiced with a partner. In kendo, kata are performed with a wooden sword called a "bokken," and no protective gear is worn. Naturally, these kata do not involve striking one another with full force.
The purpose of kata is to develop not only fundamental techniques but also a practitioner's focus, rhythm, correct distance, and mental attitude.
Development
Historically, in 1906, the ten most prominent Japanese fencing schools selected seven long sword and three short sword kata from their techniques to form the core of modern kendo. These kata have been integral to kendo practice ever since.
In 2003, the All Japan Kendo Federation (AJKF) introduced a set of kendo kata focusing on the fundamental techniques in addition to the traditional kata. This set consists of nine long sword kata and is primarily aimed at beginners to support their regular training.
